SUMMARY:OOI Regional Scale Nodes Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleague\, \nWe are writing to let you know of an important community workshop\, “Science Planning for the OOI Regional Scale Node at Axial Seamount”\, to be held Oct 5-7 in Seattle. There have been many developments since the science community last gathered to discuss plans for the cabled observatory on the Juan de Fuca ridge. This is your opportunity to learn about the research opportunities of OOI-RSN and provide ideas for how to maximize the scientific return on this important investment in research infrastructure. The workshop is sponsored by NSF and NOAA/PMEL\, with additional support from the RSN Implementing Organization (IO) at the University of Washington.\nOur goals for this workshop are to inform\, involve\, and prepare the scientific community for the RSN. Discussion themes will include: \n\n Interdisciplinary science background and future opportunities at Axial Seamount\n RSN sensor network design and installation timeline\n Optimization of sensor locations and experiments\n Cyber-infrastructure: how to access and use RSN data\n RSN data products and displays for interdisciplinary science and outreach\n Event response in the cabled observatory context\n Role of non-cabled science\n Interaction of RSN with other regional and global programs\n\nAcross all of these subjects\, we are seeking a community-wide dialog between the RSN Implementing Organizations\, Cyber-Infrastructure\, funding agencies\, and a broad representation of scientists to discuss how we can best prepare to produce transformative\, interdisciplinary science. DESCRIPTION:(Click to enlarge) \nThe Consortium for Ocean Leadership is sponsoring an Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) community event on Sept. 17\, 2011\, at The New Bedford Whaling Museum located in New Bedford\, Mass. \nThe public is invited to the free event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to see equipment displays\, watch interactive videos and meet scientists from the program in the Museum Gallery. SUMMARY:OOI Cable Landing Event
DESCRIPTION:The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) program will install off the coast of Pacific City\, Ore.\, the main undersea cable that will link scientists and others on land to data streaming from an extensive array of next generation sensors located in the ocean and on the seafloor\, marking progress in construction of the first U.S. regional cabled ocean observatory. \nThis installation work is taking place from late June through August 2011. Media is invited to attend the cable landing events taking place in Pacific City on July 13. \nDATE: Wednesday\, July 13\, 2011 \nTIME: Public Open House\, 12:00 pm to 3 p.m. followed by a Beach Ceremony. One-on-one interviews with program officials may be arranged prior to or during the Open House. \nLOCATION: The Open House will be held at the Kiawanda Community Center\, 34600 Cape Kiwanda Drive\, Pacific City\, Ore. The Beach Ceremony will be located near the beach manhole site\, a short walk south from the Community Center.

SUMMARY:Ocean Observatories Initiative Showcased at Exploration Station Event\, Dec. 4\, San Francisco\, CA
DESCRIPTION:The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) XBOX game will be displayed at Exploration Station\, a special event that is held prior to the start of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting in San Francisco\, California.  Exploration Station is a program of activities organized by the various AGU sections and focus groups.  Many AGU section and focus group members work for organizations with well-developed education and public outreach programs.  Exploration Station is an opportunity for these organizations to bring their exhibits and hands-on activities to the meeting and interact with the public in San Francisco. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nDuring the Exploration Station event\, visitors can make their way through about 20 exhibits offering a variety of easy\, family friendly\, hands-on activities.  They will also have an opportunity to interact one-on-one with scientists\, engineers\, and education specialists.  Exploration Station was established to take advantage of the large number of scientists and education specialists that gather in San Francisco to attend the AGU meetings.  Past events have been very successful at engaging young people and their families; last year’s event attracted over 200 attendees. \nThe OOI XBOX game recently made the finals of the Top 10 in Interactive Video Games for the 2011 National Science Foundation (NSF) International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge.  A group at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Birch Aquarium have been the developing the Deep-sea Extreme Environment Pilot (D.E.E.P.) game on the Microsoft Xbox360 platform.  Development of the game was funded by the University of California\, San Diego (UCSD) as part of their institutional contribution to the OOI program.  The UCSD is responsible for the Cyberinfrastructure segment of OOI. DESCRIPTION:The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) network began its construction phase in September 2009.  \nDuring the first project year we are conducting science community workshops to introduce ocean scientists\, educators\, and the broader science community to the full scope of the OOI network design and capabilities. \nOOI Science Workshop\, April 29-30\, 2010\, Tempe\, AZ\n\nAgenda\nFinal Network Design\n\nPoster information: \n  \nAll participants in the OOI Science Community Workshop are invited to present a poster on one of the following topics: \n–       OOI Design\, Instrumentation\, and Science: Posters given by OOI scientists and engineers to highlight aspects of the OOI construction and the core scientific instrumentation that will be a part of it. \n  \n–       Observatory Sensor Technology:  Posters should focus on instruments and platforms (e.g.\, gliders\, profilers) using technologies at the forefront of observing system science\, including technology already being deployed around the world and technology in development. \n–       Scientific studies and ongoing research at/near ocean observatories: Posters should focus on data being collected and utilized at sites of common interest to observatory science. \n–       Scientific Projects using the OOI: Posters should focus on ideas and innovations for projects and proposals using OOI sensors and infrastructure.  These ideas can serve as a forum for generating discussion with OOI scientists\, NSF Program Managers\, and other community members. \n–       Education and the OOI: Posters should focus on ideas and plans to use the OOI as a means to engage educators and the public using long-term\, near-real time data. \n–       Ocean Modeling and Observing System Simulation Experiments: Posters should focus on modeling and OSSE experiments and how scientists can build on them for future observatory research. \nPoster guidelines: \n–       Maximum poster size is 42″ by 42″. \n–       Poster title and authors must be submitted by April 8\, 2010 \n–       A short abstract (300 word maximum\, no figures) describing the poster must be submitted by April 16\, 2010 for inclusion in the workshop webpage and materials.  Abstracts should be submitted by email to lbrasseur [at] oceanleadership [dot] org in word format. \n–       An electronic form of the poster (*.pdf) should be submitted by May 3\, 2010 for inclusion in the final workshop webpage. \n–       At least 1 poster co-author should be available during the poster session for at least ½ hour.
