Bernard Akaawase is a Ph.D. candidate in Physical Oceanography at the University of Connecticut, where he works with Dr. Leonel Romero in the Air-Sea Interaction Lab. His research uses observational techniques to better understand the directionality of ocean surface wave breaking and its role in air-sea exchange processes and energy balance.

Beyond research, Bernard is actively engaged in science communication, education, and outreach. He has participated in national and international ocean science workshops, including the National Science Foundation (NSF) Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Data Labs activities, and has experience using OOI datasets in both research and teaching. He is also a recipient of the New Generation of Marine Scientists and Stewards Fellowship, where he works with K-12 students to promote ocean science literacy and environmental stewardship.

Bernard is passionate about expanding access to oceanographic data and tools, particularly for students and early-career researchers. Through tutorials, workshops, and collaborative initiatives, he aims to bridge the gap between ocean data systems and practical scientific applications.
