The Economist – “Wiring the World Below”
Last week an article was published in The Economist highlighting Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) infrastructure and our path toward commissioning in June 2015. The article can be found online here.
We are excited to share this publication with the OOI community as well as take the opportunity to provide you with a detailed update on the status of OOI construction. To date, we have completed deployments of the Cabled Array and the four Global Arrays – Argentine Basin, Irminger, Papa and Southern Ocean. The Coastal Arrays, Endurance and Pioneer, have partial deployments with completion of construction on schedule for early May 2015. All data received from the currently deployed instruments are being stored and, upon completion of the CyberInfrastructure (CI), these data will be imported and available online for the community. The build of the CI is making progress, having demonstrated the ability to generate various levels of data products. By the end of April 2015, we will be implementing alpha user testing of the CI. The OOI program remains on track for completion of construction and public data delivery by the end of June 2015.
