The OOI is an integrated infrastructure of science-driven platforms and sensor systems to measure physical, chemical, geological and biological properties from the seafloor to the air-sea interface. It is designed to examine processes at multiple oceanographic scales, from ocean basin to tidal basin, within the thin sections of wave fronts and stratified nutrient layers, short-term episodic events to large-scale decadal cycles. The major science drivers for the OOI were determined from years of community workshops and reports and are listed below. This list, however, is not exclusive. The OOI is an infrastructure program designed to provide data in near-real time to its user community, as such these data may be used to answer innumerable scientific inquiries.  Click here for more information on the six major Science Themes.
