What time zone are observations recorded in?

All data recorded by the OOI should be in UTC. This is sometimes referred to by its historical predecessor term GMT.

However, the exact units used for time in downloaded netcdf files outputted by the Data Portal may vary. For example, they may be in “seconds since 1900” or “seconds since 1970”. The attributes for the time variable should include a units field that specifies the actual format used.
