Observation and Sampling Approaches

The OOI is complex. It consists of five operating arrays, and data from two suspended arrays, housing more than 900 instruments of 45 types that measure more than 200 different parameters. Before putting the first platform into the water, much thought was given to sampling and observational approaches.

These approaches are outlined in a document, which explains how the OOI operates the various in situ sensing elements to ensure the collection and transmission of biological, chemical, physical, and geological observations and measurements to shore. The document is designed to serve as a guide to program personnel involved in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the observatory, while providing potential users with information about how observations are routinely collected.
