Derek Buffitt is the project manager for the Coastal and Global Scale Nodes (CGSN), operated from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. CGSN is responsible for the Coastal Pioneer Array off the coast of New England, the Global Irminger Sea Array off Greenland, and the Global Station Papa Array in the Northeast Pacific. Management of these arrays includes the operation and refurbishment of surface and subsurface moorings as well as mobile assets such as autonomous underwater vehicles and gliders. In addition to a degree in Surveying Engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Buffitt was awarded a certificate in advanced project management by Stanford University. Prior to joining CGSN in 2018, Buffitt had over 20 years experience in the private sector in surveying and ocean mapping as well as extensive experience implementing large and complicated subsea telecommunication projects for oil and gas, scientific, and government customers.
