OOIFB Community Forum to Help Shape the Future of Ocean Observing
The Ocean Observatories Initiative Facility Board (OOIFB) will host a Community Forum on December 4–5, 2026, in San Francisco, California, ahead of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting. The Forum, Building a Collective Vision for the Future of Ocean Observing, will bring together researchers, data scientists, students, resource managers, and other stakeholders to discuss shared priorities and help shape the future of sustained ocean observations.
Building on community input received through the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) recent Dear Colleague Letter requesting input on future ocean observing priorities, the Forum will focus on the value of sustained ocean observations, critical scientific and observational gaps, and opportunities for greater coordination across ocean observing programs.
The event will begin Friday evening, December 4, with an opening reception and keynote presentation by Dr. Lynne Talley of Scripps Institution of Oceanography. On Saturday, December 5, participants will take part in a panel discussion and collaborative breakout sessions aimed at identifying areas of community consensus and developing a shared vision for the future of ocean observing.
Discussions will contribute to a community-informed summary, Ocean Observations: A Summary for Stakeholders, highlighting the importance of sustained ocean observations, emerging scientific needs, and priorities for future coordination and investment.
How to Participate
The Forum will take place at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco. Virtual participation will also be available on Saturday, December 5.
Applications are required for both in-person and virtual participation. In-person space is limited, and interested participants are encouraged to apply soon. There is no registration fee, and limited travel support is available for eligible participants.
